Paragliding Courcses in India

Many paragliding schools in India are offering courses in paragliding. As far as I have checked, most of them have a similar fee structure and training. What may differ is following (and that makes the difference):

  1. How good is the paragliding training equipments they are using?
  2. What security measures are used while flying?
  3. How old/new are the training and first-flight paragliders.
  4. Is your harness good enough for your first on-the-bumps landing? (This is very important) Check for bump support.
  5. Are you being given detailed theory lessons?
  6. How much training they give? Is it one session a day or two sessions a day?
  7. Whether they give some certificates/logbooks/manuals etc.?
  8. Appriximately how many flights you get in one course?
  9. Do you get review of your training sessions, after the session is ended for the day?
  10. What help paragliding school provides you after you have done your course but have not bought the glider. Does school provider glider?
Most of the paragliding schools in India are offering following courses:

P1 Level Paragliding Course (Beginners)
This is normally a basic paragliding course, where you learn some safety, theory and ground handling. Usually, a three to four days basic course. It costs around Rs. 8000 ($175.00) to Rs. 12,000 ($260.00), depending on the school and duration of the course. In this course, you fly under the direct supervision of your instructors (on radio).

P2 Level Paragliding Course (Novice)
After you finish your P1 paragliding course, you can start your P2 level course. In this course, you are taught a little more advanced takeoff and flying techniques like reverse launch and you build more flying time in this course. This is the course where you start learning ridge soaring. You also learn some practice maneuvers and altitude judgments. This is a 4 to 5 day course, which also costs approximately Rs. 8000 ($175.00) to Rs. 12,000 ($260.00), depending on the school and duration fo the course

P3 Level Paragliding Course (Intermediate) (Not all paragliding schools offer this)
After completing your P2 level paragliding course, you build your air-time and number of flights. Upon completion of 25 or more logged flights, you are ready to take your P3 level paragliding course (Though my suggestion is that you complete atleast 50 flights before opting for P3). This paragliding course teaches you more advanced techniques of flying like thermal soaring, cross country, and other such more advanced maneuvers. This is again a 3 to 4 day course and costs approximately Rs. 8000 ($175.00) to Rs. 12,000 ($260.00), depending on the school and duration of the course.

Some F.A.Q. about paragliding courses in India

Do I have to buy anything to do the paragliding course?
No. All equipments are provided by paragliding school and is included in the fee. Please bring your water bottle (bring 2 bottles for P1) and wear a full-sleeved t-shirt for P1.

I don't know paragliding at all. Is it safe to learn? Do I have to jump from a cliff?
First thing, you NEVER JUMP from any cliff in paragliding. For your P1 course, you walk/run/fly from a hill which has a slope of about 10 to 20 degrees for your ground handling. Even your flights are from less slope hills. As for the safety issue, it has all the risks which are there in any form of aviation sports. But paragliding is much safer because you are flying at very low speeds.

If I go to paragliding schools in other city, do they have the lodging and food facilities
Most of the paragliding schools arrange for lodging and food at an extra cost. While registering for a course, please ask specifically whether boarding/ lodging/ food is included in the fee. If not, ask how much will it cost.

Isn't it possible to enjoy paragliding without taking a course? Like only once, just for fun?
Yes. If you just want to take a joy ride, most of the paragliding schools offer tendem flights where their own experienced pilot will be doing all the flying and you will just be sitting and enjoying (and may be taking some pictures). Tendem flights cost anywhere from Rs. 1500 to Rs. 2500 per flight of around 10 minutes to half an hour, depending on the weather conditions.
