Paragliding in India

Reserve Parachute

Reserve/ Emergency parachutes are compulsory for all your flights. It is the only alternative to land safely in case, your wing is no longer flying or any accident. The new age paragliders are tested and certified for safety and with a good pilot, reserve deployment is rare. The tests on the paragliders are done to certify them for recovery from any accidents and return to normal flight in 3 seconds with or without pilots input. The reserve deployment is done only in case of accidents such as mid air crash with another paraglider, twisting of the lines or cravat (the wing cloth gets entangled into the lines) and where no recovery is possible. Release of a reserve parachute can be done by hand throwing, or by spring & rocket ejection mechanism.

Reserve parachutes are of two types, either pulled down apex (PDA) or annular. In PDA parachutes the center is pulled down for wider drag area. These chutes open faster. Annular types have a ring design and they descend even slower than the PDA. The size of parachutes should be selected according to the weight of the pilot.
